A review of Dataquest as a data science resource – 2023 update

Updated in 2023

What does Dataquest do?

Dataquest offers online, 24-week project-based data science courses focused on data analysis using R and Python.

They have hundreds of courses on a variety of data science topics in varying difficulty levels. The goal is to teach specific tools through coding and hands-on projects. Some of the courses focus on the fundamentals. These are better for beginners. But, the majority are more intermediate or advanced. People with some background in the subject should take these.

Aspiring data scientists and those with some background who are looking to further advance their skills can also participate in Dataquest career or skill paths. These are curated sequences of courses, arranged to take students from zero to job-ready. The paths are based on the role. For example: Data analyst in R or Python (beginner), data scientist in Python (intermediate), and data engineer (intermediate).

Who is Dataquest for?

Current and aspiring data scientists can both benefit from the courses and paths offered by Dataquest. The bootcamp is more focused on people who are looking to start from the very beginning of their data science career. But, the classes can be helpful for data scientists looking to advance their skills.

What does Dataquest cost? How much work is involved?

Dataquest operates on a subscription model. Some of their courses are free. For the rest, users can choose to pay $33.25 per month for the premium plan. With this plan, users get access to the complete course catalog, 30+ guided projects, practice problems, and the Dataquest community.

Ratings and reviews

Dataquest is highly rated online. It is on a few top 10 bootcamp lists. Similarly, on CourseReport, the program is reviewed favorably by students. Many enjoyed the curriculum, especially the lack of videos. They felt that it forced them to learn by doing. They also like that you go at your own pace.

Most people compare Dataquest with DataCamp, another platform with a variety of data science courses. The main differences are the videos. While some people like that Dataquest does not have videos, other found it harder to engage with a completely text-based tool. For both platforms, and for almost all bootcamps and online education tools, it is important for students to practice on their own to really understand the topics.
